Selena
She broke down barriers within the music business by performing, singing as well as a designer. She was Mexican-American, but also traditional. She was the first to bring Tejano into mainstream music. Her tragic death cut a hole in her growing popularity and, as often happens when a glowing, charming singer dies too young, it left many to mourn her unrealized potential. Fans have been inspired over the years to dig in to work even more to ensure that her achievements won't be lost in the dust. The tragic shooting death of Tejano singer Selena caused a resurgence in the Latino community which can be compared to the reactions to the deaths of Elvis Presley and John Lennon. Selena is a hugely popular Latino artist throughout North America, Selena's music has influenced many people across different cultures. Selena has been called by some as the Latina Madonna, but she's still an excellent example to follow. Selena's values of family life offstage and involvement with AIDS awareness programs make her a good example.
